Famvir (famciclovir) is a prescription medication that is taken orally to prevent the outbreak of the herpes virus and to suppress outbreaks. It is also widely used to treat outbreaks of herpes zoster or shingles.
The herpes virus can lie dormant in the body for years after being contracted. When it does surface the area of infection will be noticeably reddened and will have clusters of legions or blisters that can be sensitive to touch, itch, ooze puss and bleed.
Shingles typically appears on the upper torso, looking like narrow red patches that have clusters of blisters or legions on them. They can bleed and ooze and be painful to touch, and if left untreated they can continue to spread on the body.
The only difference between these viruses is that they are slightly different strains, one more commonly appearing in on and around the genitals and the anus, and one most commonly found on the mouth in the form of cold sores. They both however, can appear at any place on the body.
Famvir is a powerful antiviral drug that attacks the herpes simplex virus in your body. It effectively slows the virus down enough so that the body can naturally react with its own defenses, limiting the duration of symptoms and even preventing future outbreaks from occurring.
