Nexium (esomeprazole) is a prescription drug which is generally prescribed by doctors to treat patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD or heartburn; acid reflux), ulcers and erosive esophagitis.
There are several ways that you can control your heartburn.
The most common symptoms that you will experience from GERD are as follows:
Both of these drugs are from a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s), which block and reduce acid reduction. The only real difference between them is the price that you will pay. Nexium costs less to acquire than Prevacid and has been shown to be more potent.
This drug works by limiting the amount of acid production in the stomach which contributes to heartburn and acid reflux.
Make sure that your doctor knows about ALL of the drugs that you are currently taking. Women who are pregnant or nursing should talk to their doctor before taking this drug. People who currently suffer from liver disease or anybody who is taking drugs that contain digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), or iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, and Femiron) may not be able to take Nexium.
