Zyrtec is an allergy medication that relieves the typical symptoms of seasonal outdoor allergies, indoor allergies and hay fever, such as a runny nose, congestion, sneezing, itching and watery eyes. It can also be used to treat symptoms of hives, such as rashes and itching. Zyrtec uses an antihistamine to block the effects of histamine. Histamine is produced by the body in reaction to exposure to allergens. Histamine in turn produces the allergy symptoms that make life uncomfortable. By blocking the effects of histamine, the allergy symptoms are relieved.
Seasonal allergies are most often caused by pollen from trees, grass, and weeds. Indoor allergies can be caused by exposure to a range of household substances, such as dust, dust mites, mold and pet dander.
Results with Zyrtec may vary. Zyrtec should not be taken if you have kidney or liver disease, or if you have allergies to cetrizine, hydroxyzine or some other medications. Do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication until you know how it affects you. Your health status should be reviewed by a doctor prior to taking Zyrtec.
